Melrose Pharmacy’s 1930s style and urban flare definitely makes an aesthetic impression with customers, but small-town, personalized customer service is where the independent Phoenix-based business really excels.
“Melrose feels like a small town in a big city. We remember your name, and start pulling your prescription bag out before you even get to the counter,” Melrose Pharmacy owner Teresa Stickler said. “We take the time to go above and beyond.”
A decade ago, Stickler never imagined she would own a business.
Stickler went to pharmacy school and always wanted to help people, but after working at a chain pharmacy, she realized she wanted to help patients in more meaningful ways.
“I started to get frustrated I wasn’t able to give the kind of care that I wanted to,” Stickler said. “Personal health care should not be rushed through a drive-thru.”
The frustration led her to opening her own pharmacy, where she could provide unprecedented levels of customer service.
Melrose not only fills prescriptions, but it creates customized medications, offers specialty medications, hormone restoration and custom-packaged medication. It’s also the first pharmacy in Phoenix to provide customized packaging solution “My One Pac” to patients who take multiple medications.
Transitioning from being a pharmacist to both a pharmacist and business owner has been challenging at times for Stickler, but she took professional development into her own hands by learning to lead and efficiently manage her business.
“As a pharmacist I was trained on how to take care of people, I wasn’t trained on how to run a business,” Stickler said. “I ended up getting very overwhelmed, so finally I looked into a business coach program for pharmacists. That really helped me spear head into the next level.”
When she opened the business in November 2005, she had one employee in addition to herself. They filled about 35 prescriptions a day. Ten years later, Melrose has grown from two employees to 12. They fill about 185 prescriptions per day.
Stickler is committed to the independent pharmacy industry and her local community, which gives her employees a sense of pride.
“A lot of people support us because they know us. We care about our customers and I’m sure that’s why people keep coming back to us,” Stickler said.
