Finding a hero in today’s shaky economy may not be as difficult as you think. It could be you, or you could pave the way for your employees to feel like champions.

Such is the message of Scottsdale-based United Blood Services, an arm of Blood Systems, which kicks off its “Find the Hero in You” campaign this month.

“Ordinary people are saving lives every day,” says Audrey Jennings, executive director of UBS/Arizona. “They do it while they are on lunch break or while they are running errands. They have found the hero in themselves by donating blood.”

The non-profit USB started as the Salt River Valley Blood Bank in 1943 and has grown to be one of the country’s largest such organizations. It now serves 500 hospitals in 18 states, including 50 in Arizona. There are blood donation centers in Phoenix, Glendale, Scottsdale, Mesa and Chandler. Blood donations are separated into components – red blood cells, platelets, plasma, and cryoprecipitate – to help multiple patients.

UBS is associated with Blood Systems Research Institute, where transfusion science researchers are breaking ground in such areas as transfusion-transmitted infections and virology, genotype analysis of blood group polymorphisms, new virus discovery and cellular therapies.

The new national campaign encourages individuals and businesses to participate or host three blood drives a year and earn reward points that can net free movies, video rentals, restaurants discounts, gas cards and more.
