Northern Arizona University was approved by the Arizona State Board of Nursing late last week to expand its accelerated nursing program to its North Valley campus, located in Phoenix. The accelerated BSN (ABSN) is a 12-month program designed for students who have existing bachelor’s degrees in a field outside of nursing. After completing the program, students are eligible to take the National Council Licensure Examination for registered nurses (NLCEX-RN). This expansion ensures that more students are prepared to enter the nursing workforce, which the state of Arizona desperately needs.

This news comes on the heels of the recent announcement that NAU School of Nursing received a $6.4 million state-funded grant, a portion of which will provide full-tuition scholarships to students enrolled in an accelerated bachelor of nursing program. Full-tuition scholarships will be available for Summer 2023, Fall 2023 and Spring 2024 admission cycles at the North Valley campus. Students who accept the scholarship must serve as a registered nurse for four years in the state of Arizona.

“NAU is on the forefront of tackling our extreme nursing shortages. The expansion of our accelerated nursing program to North Valley is one example of how we are working to get more well-prepared nurses from all backgrounds into the Arizona communities that desperately need them,” said Janina Johnson, executive director of NAU’s School of Nursing.

The North Valley campus is located off I-17 and 28th Avenue and is equipped with a state-of-the-art simulation and skills lab center. Applications are being accepted for this Summer 2023 ABSN program.
