The Phoenix Chamber of Commerce selected Goettl from among 114 nominees as a 2016 IMPACT award recipient.
The company won in the category “Response to Adversity” for companies with 250 or fewer employees. The Phoenix Chamber honored Goettl and seven other Valley companies during an awards luncheon on May 18 at the Arizona Biltmore.
Goettl Chairman Dan Burke accepted the award on behalf of owner Kenneth Goodrich and the Goettl team.
During his acceptance speech, Burke spoke from the heart about “the really dark days not so long ago when things were really grim for Goettl.”
“One evening when it looked like the shutdown of Goettl was inevitable, I received a phone call from Ken Goodrich,” Burke said. “He told me he wanted to save Goettl and he would try to make a deal to buy it, if I would help him rebuild it.”
Burke went on to explain how as the company rebuilt itself, it was successfully able to have 67 of its 68 original employees remain a part of the rebuilding process.
“Many years ago Goettl had advertised a slogan that read, ‘Some pretty tough specimens have evolved in the desert,’” Burke said. “I want you to know that you can actually see some of these tough specimens right here today at the Goettl tables.”
A Phoenix Chamber representative declined to comment on why Goettl was
selected because the decision was made by an independent panel representing a handful of Valley businesses. Those businesses are APS, CopperPoint, HDR and Desert Fleet-Services.
Burke said after a business associate nominated Goettl, the company participated in a lengthy process which included an interview by a panel and a writeup where Goettl representatives had answer key questions about the company.
“It’s not a popularity contest,” Burke said. “It’s what did you do and how did you do it.”
Goettl was founded in Arizona in 1939 and was the first company to bring modern air conditioning technology to residential customers. New ownership in 2013 paved the way for the company’s legacy to continue and Goettl has overcome significant challenges during the past three years. By focusing on positive opportunities, candid responses to the media and guiding principles, Goettl once again provides highest quality services while making a positive impact on customers, its team, the industry and the community.
“We did have some help with some customers who remained loyal to us and vendors who gave us credit and took some chances, so it was an interesting story for this 77-year-old brand, which almost didn’t make it and now we’ve doubled the sales,” Burke said.
Other 2016 IMPACT Award recipients include Danzeisen Dairy, Community Champion; The Dhaba/India Plaza, Economic Driver and Melrose Pharmacy, Entrepreneurial Excellence in the 250 employees or fewer category and Cox Communications, Community Champion; Caliber, The Wealth Development Company, Economic Driver; CopperPoint Insurance Companies, Response to Adversity and WebPT, Entrepreneurial Excellence in the more than 250 employees category. Business of the year went to Danzeisen Dairy and Cox Communications and the 2016 IMPACTful Nonprofit award recipient was Junior Achievement of Arizona.
