Phoenix law firm stronger than ever

While no one was fully prepared for the “Great Recession”, Rodolfo (Rudy) Parga, Jr. says his law firm, Ryley Carlock & Applewhite, was better positioned than many others.

“One thing we took great pride in is that we had already been very proactive, even before the economic downturn, in terms of diversifying the delivery of legal services we provide as a law firm,” Parga (left) says.

As a full-service firm, Ryley Carlock & Applewhite offers expertise from natural resources to securities to litigation. Founded in Phoenix in 1948, the firm has more than 100 attorneys in Arizona, Colorado and Michigan.  Parga says the firm’s trademark, “The Business of Solutions®,” means they are problem solvers. That philosophy certainly was tested when he was elected Managing Shareholder in January, 2008.

“There was so much uncertainty and everyone was trying to figure out what’s next,” he recalls. “Our primary role at that time was continuing to provide exceptional legal advice to our clients and help them navigate the many challenges when the floor fell out.”

While big companies and large law firms struggled to survive, Parga says Ryley Carlock & Applewhite’s business model was more powerful than ever. “What the economic downturn really exposed with respect to the legal profession is that it wasn’t good enough just to provide exceptional legal services, but you had to do it in an efficient and value-based manner.”

Because Ryley Carlock & Applewhite had already been using staff attorneys for various services and offering different pricing models, they remained competitive during the recession and recovery. Parga believes companies will continue to demand outstanding service and value. As the economy grows stronger, he also expects his firm’s clients will ask for more.

“When things were really tough you had clients that didn’t want to invest in litigation,” Parga says. “Now you’re seeing that corporate America is beginning to litigate and protect their rights with respect to anything from non-competes to restrictive covenants to intellectual property rights.”
