What does your company/organization do?

Representing over 2,400 businesses across the greater Phoenix region, the Greater Phoenix Chamber promotes regional prosperity with forward-thinking public policy, intentional economic growth, and diverse, prepared talent.

How long have you worked there and in the Phoenix area?

I have been in the Valley since 1999 and assumed the role of president and CEO of the Greater Phoenix Chamber in 2009. I joined the chamber in 2006 as vice president of public affairs and Economic Development representing the interests of the business community at the Arizona State Legislature and Phoenix City Hall as vice president of public affairs.

What would others describe as your greatest strength as a leader?

I am very transparent with our team. We have open lines of communication and I pride myself on being flexible and pivoting when we need to. Over the years, we’ve been innovative with our programming, and I’ve tried to build a collaborative environment where departments work together instead of operating independently.

What significant challenge have you faced in your career and how did you overcome it?

When I took over as CEO it was a challenging time. It was the Great Recession, one of the worst economic downturns in the U.S. I was relatively new to the industry and saw it as an opportunity to learn. I learned new skills such as looking for solutions around the corner and matching the talents of my team with the areas of greatest need, skills that I still use today. It turned out to be a great learning experience and a time of growth for me as a leader.

What was your first leadership role, and what is a lasting lesson from that experience?

I still remember my first time leading. It was in 9th or 10th grade and we got to spend a week at the Florida [legislature]. I lived in Florida at the time and was responsible for leading our student delegation in the capitol Tallahassee. It was very rewarding, but I quickly learned it takes eff ort and time to lead intentionally. It was also the first time I realized not everyone thinks the same way or shares the same views. It was an eye-opening experience, but one that contributed to my pursuing a public policy career.

What has been your proudest accomplishment in your career, and why?

I have been very fortunate to work with so many wonderful and talented leaders over my career. I have really enjoyed the team at the chamber and like watching them grow and advance  in their careers. Even if they have left the chamber for other opportunities, I am gratified to know we played a small role in helping them launch their career.

Work-life balance is important. How do you spend your time recharging?

Work-life balance is something I greatly value. I encourage our team to take time for themselves and their families, too. Personally, I love spending time with my family and traveling. We have a son in college, so whenever we can all be together, I consider that a win! We usually try to take a trip to a new place each summer.

What leadership advice would you share with emerging leaders?

My biggest advice is don’t let your ego get in your way and lead with kindness.

What would your colleagues be shocked to know about you?

I am an avid car nut and space nerd! I am a huge Star Trek fan and enjoy learning about all things physics and reading the writings of Stephen Hawking and Neil deGrasse Tyson. I think all of this stemmed from watching the Apollo launch as a kid and being absolutely fascinated with the idea of venturing into outer space.
