Creating Inclusive Work Environments Through Universal Design: Lessons from Peckham

By: Nate Vander Laan, Vice President of Facilities, Peckham

When Peckham embarked on designing our first state-of-the art facility in 2007, there was no blueprint for universal design—only a curiosity to explore, a dedication to asking questions, and a safe, inclusive environment in which to do so. Over the years, through several projects and a strong partnership with Integrated Architecture, we’ve developed an adaptive, innovative and award-winning approach to architecture that intentionally considers the needs and abilities of all individuals.

As we celebrate National Disability Employment Awareness Month and prepare to open our new Blackhawk Facility in Phoenix on November 14, we’d like to share some valuable insights for businesses aiming to foster inclusive environments. Universal Design is about intentionally creating spaces that accommodate everyone, regardless of their abilities.

Here are key lessons from the Peckham experience:

1. Prioritize Accessibility from the Start

Universal design begins with foundational elements like accessible parking. Be sure accessible spaces are close to entrances and easy to locate.  Walkways should be barrier free and provide abundant room for clear access to entrances.  Additionally, providing access to public transit options makes the workplace more accessible for everyone, especially those with mobility challenges.

2. Choose Sites with Employees in Mind

Consider where employees live and how they commute. Choose locations that minimize travel time and support diverse modes of transportation, ensuring that access to the workplace is inclusive for all.

3. Design for Simple and Intuitive use

Make spaces simple to navigate by eliminating unnecessary complexity and providing clear, perceptible information. Offering intuitive wayfinding through color-coded signage, graphics, and multiple modes of communication—pictorial, verbal, and tactile – are universal design principles. This approach makes it easy for everyone, regardless of cognitive or sensory abilities, to move smoothly through key areas like restrooms, breakrooms and offices.

5. Rethink Restroom Design

Consider going beyond ADA standards by designing restrooms with ADA stalls located first followed by larger than normal individual stalls, grab bars in multiple areas, and gender-inclusive options. These thoughtful touches ensure everyone feels comfortable and supported.

6. Ensure Equal Access to Natural Light

In Peckham’s spaces, natural light is available to everyone—there are no exclusive “corner offices.” This creates an environment where all employees, regardless of position, feel valued and included.

7. Offer Refresh and Wellness Rooms

Recognizing the importance of employee wellbeing, we’ve built refresh rooms where employees can take a step back and recharge. These rooms cater to different needs, offering both individual and group spaces.

8. Design Inclusive Training Spaces

Peckham’s training spaces provide barrier free access to all users regardless of if they are the student or the trainer.  Clear access allows users to move around the spaces without discomfort or interruption to others.

9. Provide Ergonomic Furniture

Our commitment to universal design extends to furniture. Height-adjustable desks and ergonomic chairs ensure comfort for all employees, while acoustic elements like sound clouds and white noise create a more pleasant working environment.

10. Focus on Details

Small details can make a big difference. Peckham offers everything from accessible microwaves to power-assisted doors, ensuring that all employees’ needs are met. Details like bike storage, lockers, and shower facilities to accommodate various preferences and lifestyles create an environment for employees to thrive.

By prioritizing accessibility, fostering inclusivity, and paying attention to the small details, businesses can create work environments that truly support all employees. In celebration of National Disability Employment Awareness Month, we hope our example inspires your organization to design spaces that benefit everyone.
