This Women’s History Month, the Greater Phoenix Chamber proudly shines a light on our member, Higher Ground, and the extraordinary women driving its mission to empower students and communities.
Higher Ground’s commitment to transformative education is deeply rooted in the belief that when women lead, families and communities thrive.
Higher Ground’s story is a testament to this belief. Co-founded by Barbara Azarias-Suzumoto, the organization has grown into a powerful force for change, impacting students in Chandler and Tucson through its data-driven Restart SMART initiative. This month, we not only celebrate Barbara’s leadership, but also honor the legacies of two remarkable women who shaped the landscape of education:
- Catherine Brewer Benson (1822-1908): A pioneer and the first African American woman to graduate from Oberlin College. Benson dedicated her life to teaching and advocating for educational access for all, demonstrating unwavering commitment to equity.
- Mary McLeod Bethune (1875-1955): An educator, civil rights activist, and humanitarian, Bethune founded Bethune-Cookman University. Her belief in the power of education to uplift marginalized communities resonates deeply with Higher Ground’s mission.
These historical figures, along with Higher Ground’s leadership team, exemplify the power of women to drive positive change.
Higher Ground’s executive team, a powerhouse of dedicated women, continues to build on this legacy:
- Barbara Azarias-Suzumoto, Chief of Staff & Co-Founder: Building resilience, empowering women leaders, and ensuring community voice.
- Rema Hamdan, Chief Operations Officer: Driving sustainable growth and operational excellence.
- Dallas Lara-Valencia, Chief Quality Officer: Championing equity and driving Restart SMART initiatives.
Higher Ground’s Restart SMART initiative is making a tangible difference in our community. In the 2023-2024 academic year, they achieved a 92% decrease in school-wide threats and a 47% improvement in student attendance. Their focus on executive functions, community wellness, and community outcomes underscores their commitment to holistic student development.
As a valued member of the Greater Phoenix Chamber, Higher Ground exemplifies the spirit of community partnership and the power of collaboration. We encourage our members to learn more about their vital work and consider supporting their mission.
