In the ever-evolving landscape of nonprofit work, few stories reflect the power of purpose and longevity like that of Dena Kidd, Senior Development Officer at Junior Achievement of Arizona (JA). With a career spanning nearly four decades – all at JA, Dena’s journey is a testament to the transformative impact of mission-driven work and the deep relationships that sustain it.
Dena’s JA story began in 1989, when she transitioned from volunteer to staff member, recruited by then-president Gail Yates. Starting as a program manager, she was responsible for recruiting and training volunteers for JA’s in-classroom programs. Her role quickly expanded to include fundraising, and she later led the events and communications teams, launching cornerstone initiatives like the JA Open Golf Classic and JA Golfer’s Dream Day—events that continue to define JA’s community engagement.
Today, Dena serves on the Development Team, where her tenure and deep institutional knowledge make her a vital connector between JA and its legacy partners. She works closely with family foundations, long-standing supporters, and new donors, helping to ensure the organization’s continued growth and relevance.
When asked about the most memorable part of her journey, Dena doesn’t hesitate: it’s the people. “Meeting some incredible people along the way” has been a defining feature of her career. Her pride is equally evident when she reflects on receiving JA’s national Rising Star Award in 2022—a recognition that surprised her, given her long-standing service. It’s a moment that underscores her continued innovation and dedication, even decades into her career.
So why has she stayed so long? “I drank the ‘Kool Aid’. It’s the people and the mission.” she says with a smile. For Dena, JA is more than a job—it’s a calling. She found a place where she could make a meaningful difference in the lives of underserved students while applying the skills she honed in college. The shared mission among her colleagues—to prepare Arizona learners to succeed in work and life—is what keeps her inspired.
The impact she’s witnessed is staggering. When Dena first joined JA, the organization served around 70,000 students annually. Today, that number has more than doubled, with nearly 180,000 Arizona students benefiting from JA’s programs. This growth reflects not only the organization’s expanding reach but also the tireless efforts of leaders like Dena who have helped build and sustain its foundation.
Dena Kidd’s story is one of quiet leadership, steadfast commitment, and the kind of legacy that shapes generations. Her journey reminds us that real change takes time—and that those who stay the course often make the most profound impact.
