Mexico didn’t become Arizona’s largest international trading partner by accident. The mutually beneficial relationship between our regions’ economies has been fostered through the decades by business and political leaders dedicated to growing our economy and investing in our success.
It is our job as today’s business and political leaders to keep the Arizona welcome mat rolled out and a collaborative hand extended across the border to business and political leaders in Mexico. Regardless of the sway of political winds or ferocity of political rhetoric, Arizona is always open for business.
I joined a group including Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton, Glenn Hamer of the Arizona Chamber, Steve Zylstra of the Arizona Technology Council, City of Phoenix Economic Development Director Christine Mackay, Robin Reed of the Black Chamber and others to celebrate the grand opening of Phoenix’s Northern Mexico trade office in Hermosillo, Sonora. More than 100 Sonoran business leaders, residents and media members attended the event, underscoring the significance of the opening on both sides of the border.
Hermosillo-based custom label manufacturing company Etiquetas e Impresiones de Mexico SA DE CV, which worked directly with the new office, announced a $2.2 million capital investment at a facility near Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport during the event as well.
While these events are wins for Phoenix, Mexico and the company, it is equally important to send a message to other Mexico- and Arizona-based companies: There is substantial, ongoing cross-border business occurring now and we intend to continue to grow that commerce into the future.
I am honored each time I visit Mexico with other Greater Phoenix region leaders. The visit was Stanton’s unprecedented 18th visit to Mexico during his time as mayor. I applaud him and all the leaders who not only talk the talk about the necessity of trade with Mexico, but also back it up with action.
We are the leaders of this region. It is our responsibility to deliver the vital message to Mexico that we are dedicated to growing our economies through mutually beneficial trade.
The Mexico-Arizona economic relationship has been entrusted to us. We must do all we can to keep it growing.
