Governor Doug Ducey Signs Bi-Partisan Measure Supporting Balanced Energy Options in Arizona

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
February 24, 2020

Customers Overwhelmingly Want Option of Natural Gas as an Energy Source

PHOENIX –Last week, Governor Doug Ducey signed House Bill 2686 into law. The bipartisan legislation, which passed the Arizona House of Representatives and Senate last week, was supported by a diverse coalition of Arizona businesses and associations. House Bill 2686 was designed to safeguard balanced energy options, including the use of natural gas, in Arizona.

Shortly before lawmakers considered the legislation, the Greater Phoenix Chamber and the Arizona Chamber of Commerce and Industry released key findings of a recent customer survey highlighting that 92 percent of respondents statewide prefer having the choice of using natural gas in their homes. The survey also outlined that 82 percent of respondents were strongly opposed to natural gas being eliminated from their homes.

“Passage of HB 2686 demonstrates that our leadership is listening to the people of Arizona, who clearly appreciate the numerous benefits of natural gas,” said Glenn Hamer, president and CEO of the Arizona Chamber of Commerce and Industry. “Natural Gas is cleaner, affordable and reliable, and a product that is in demand by homeowners and businesses,” he added.

This legislation came in response to energy policies from around the country that aim to limit access to natural gas. The legislation was sponsored by Senate President Karen Fann, Speaker of the House Rusty Bowers and others in an effort to protect balanced energy options in Arizona for consumers and businesses.

“The Greater Phoenix Chamber thanks Governor Ducey for signing this important legislation into law, and we applaud the efforts of legislators on both side of the aisle who understand that natural gas is a cleaner fuel, and is part of the solution in helping us to meet our energy goals, without sacrificing jobs that help sustain our economy,” stressed Todd Sanders, president and CEO of the Greater Phoenix Chamber.

HB 2686 was supported by the following organizations:
Arizona Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Arizona Manufacturers Council, Greater Phoenix Chamber, East Valley Chamber of Commerce Alliance, West Valley Chamber of Commerce Alliance, Chandler Chamber of Commerce, Tucson Chamber of Commerce, Greater Yuma Economic Development Council, Southern Arizona Leadership Council, Americans for Prosperity Arizona, Arizona Free Enterprise Club, Goldwater Institute, Arizona Restaurant Association, Home Builders Association of Central Arizona, Southern Arizona Home Builders Association, Robson Communities, Arizona Chapter of the Associated General Contractors of America, Arizona Multihousing Association, Arizona Association of Realtors, Arizona Retailers Association, the Arizona Chapter of the National Association of Industrial and Office Properties, Arizona Lodging and Tourism Association, Southwest Gas Corporation, Unisource Energy Services, Arizona Propane Gas Association, Grand Canyon State Electric Cooperative, Western States Petroleum Association, Arizona Municipal Power Users Association, Transwestern Pipeline Company, EPCOR Water, Wildfire, AARP and the Tucson Urban League.
