As the voice of business, the Greater Phoenix Chamber advocates for pro-business, pro-growth candidates and policies, and this year’s election is no different. In the 2020 General Election, the Chamber’s Political Action Committee proudly endorsed 60 candidates. Additionally, the Chamber took a firm stance against ballot measures that would irrevocably harm Arizona’s economic prosperity.
I believe that every election is a monumental opportunity for people to truly influence their communities’ laws, policies, and directions. And today is no different. Today’s election is an opportunity for people to make their voices heard, exercise their right to elect representatives that reflect their priorities, and support or oppose critical issues that will impact their lives.
Like most things in 2020, this year’s election will be unprecedented. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and physical distancing requirements, many individuals have opted to vote by mail, casting ballots from their home, and sending them to election officials for tabulation.
This concept is nothing new to Arizona. A national leader for early voting and mail-in voting, Arizona’s Legislature passed a bill in 1991 that allows Arizonans to request absentee ballots for any reason. In 2007, the Legislature created the Permanent Early Voting List, allowing people to opt-in to early voting in every election.
Since then, Arizonans have consistently and increasingly relied on early ballots and mail-in voting. According to Arizona Public Media, 88% of Arizonan voters voted early in August’s Primary Election. Many experts anticipate that today’s election will include an increased amount of early and mail-in voting from residents.
While Arizona has a robust and trusted early voting and mail-in ballot process, many people prefer to vote in-person on the official election day.
As a leader, I’m proud to encourage my staff to vote by offering them paid-time away from work on election days to participate in our country’s democratic process. As an Arizonan, I’m proud of our leadership on early and mail-in voting, and I’m proud to vote.
If you haven’t voted yet, I urge you to find your polling location and cast your ballot. Polling locations in Maricopa County are open until 7 p.m. tonight.
