Started by American Express in 2010, Small Business Saturday serves as a day to encourage consumers to #ShopSmall and bring money to local businesses. It is recognized each year on the Saturday after Thanksgiving, helping kick-off the holiday shopping season.
This year businesses have had to navigate through the COVID-19 pandemic, finding ways for their customers to safely participate in the shopping experience. From limiting the number of people in-store and requiring masks, to offering curbside pick-up and free shipping, businesses have pivoted.
So, while this year might look a little different, it is important to shop small and support your favorite local businesses, whether in-store or online as an estimated 67 cents on every dollar spent at a small business stays in the local community
Here are a few ways you can participate in this year’s Small Business Saturday:
Shop Local
The most obvious way you can participate in Small Business Saturday is by shopping! Whether you are shopping online or in-person, local businesses are a great place to find unique gifts for everyone on your holiday shopping list.
Use Social Media
While you are out shopping, be sure to share your experiences on Small Business Saturday by using #ShopSmall. This can be as simple as a selfie on your Instagram story tagging the business or a quick tweet thanking the businesses you visit!
Write a Review
You don’t have to spend money to participate in Small Business Saturday. Online reviews can make or break a business when it comes to gaining new customers. Take a few minutes to write a review online about a business you love!
