34 by 34 endeavors to help 34 million people live more prosperous lives by 2034
PHOENIX – As part of Cox’s plan to help 34 million people live more prosperous lives by 2034, the company kicked off its “34 by 34” social impact initiative at South Mountain Park with a $250,000 grant to the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Valley. The grant will fund the installation of solar panels at the Rosenzweig Boys & Girls Club branch in Phoenix.
In Arizona, Cox’s ambitious 34 by 34 goal gives Cox an opportunity to take action in the communities where its employees live and work, while partnering with national and local nonprofits to deliver help and support where it’s needed most.
“We are happy to donate solar panels and carbon/solar educational programming to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Phoenix that will lead to efficiencies and upgrades that are consisted with our Cox conservation goals,” said Mark Greatrex, President of Cox Communications.
“Our commitment to sustainability efforts and empowering our youth to reach their full potential helps us with our mission of building a better future for the next generation. And with this donation, we estimate that Boys & Girls Clubs of the Valley will save more than 60 percent on electricity and gas which they will then be able to use to reinvest in their mission of serving the youth in this community,” added Greatrex.
“From an early age, we start talking with Club members about how they are connected to their local community and how they can be a steward for good now and in the future. Cox’s investment in solar panels for our Rosenzweig Club will help us save money, conserve energy and reduce our environmental footprint. It’s also a visual reminder to our neighbors, parents and Club members how we can include sustainable technologies in the built environment to make a positive impact,” said Marcia Mintz. “We are grateful to Cox and Southface Energy Institute for helping make this improvement at our Club.”
Cox’s solar installation at the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Valley’s Rosenzweig Branch will save the Club an estimated 116,640 (KWh) in annual electricity, representing an estimated annual savings of $14,688, so the Club can invest those savings back into the community and the organization. At the same time, Cox’s solar installation will avoid 82,660 kg in carbon emissions currently generated.
Cox employees attending the 34 by 34 kickoff event at South Mountain rolled up their sleeves and assembled 1,000 solar and STEM activity kits that were donated to the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Valley for children participating in the Club’s summer camps.
Boys & Girls Clubs of the Valley will be hosting Summer Camps across the Valley at no cost for families from June to August 2022, thanks to an investment from the state of Arizona and the AZ OnTrack Summer Camp program. Parents can sign up their students ages 5-18 for Summer Camp programs at www.bgcaz.org/summerfun. Camps will include fun STEM activities, academic enrichment and social and recreational programs for all ages.
Continuing in the spirit of the Cox 34 by 34’s social equity pillar, Cox Southwest Vice President of Public Affairs, Susan Anable surprised longtime nonprofit partner STARS with a $10,000 donation. Cox has supported STARS for more than 20 years during which time STARS team members with intellectual and developmental disabilities are given the opportunity to earn a paycheck as they sort, clean, package and test recycled Cox equipment, cables and remote-control devices. These jobs are a critical stepping stone in the growth of the many individuals with special needs that STARS helps train daily. In just the past two years, Cox has provided more than $200,000 in work opportunities for STARS team members while also funding other STARS programs such as the Day Program.
Cox has a long history of supporting the Boys and Girls Clubs in the state and has provided 43 technology centers in the Arizona area Boys & Girls Clubs and other community centers which provide connectivity to help level the playing field so children can complete their homework online and be safely entertained after school.
