Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona has committed to donating $2,500 to an Arizona nonprofit upon reaching a milestone of 2,500 pledges by Jan. 1 for its Stigma-Free Arizona campaign.
Stigma-Free Arizona is designed to challenge and change the public’s perception of mental and behavioral health conditions. The campaign urges Arizonans to take the pledge in eliminating the stigma associated these conditions.
1 in 7 people say they have experienced substance use disorder and at least 1 in 5 adults struggle with a mental health condition, yet over 50% don’t seek help. Stigma and fear of those finding out is listed as a primary reason for nearly 25% of those people.
“It’s one small step that can make a big difference to someone who has experienced the sting of stigma firsthand,” Cara Christ, MD, Chief Medical Officer said. “Each pledge is a visual and tangible representation of support. Our hope is that those who see that support will feel empowered to reach out for help—knowing there is a multitude of Arizonans rooting for them.”
Stigma can act as a roadblock preventing people from getting the care they need and deserve. To eliminate this stigma, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona is asking Arizonans to take the pledge in creating a culture of compassion and understanding – so that those who need help, don’t do it alone.
