Arizona nonprofit providing free, medically tailored meals to people facing cancer brings community together to spotlight nutrition, compassionate care and the growing Food Is Medicine movement
PHOENIX (Sept. 1, 2026) — The Joy Bus, a Phoenix-based nonprofit that provides free, medically tailored meals and compassionate support to individuals facing cancer, celebrated the official premiere of Meals That Matter on Sunday, Aug. 30, at The Henry in Phoenix. The sold-out event was hosted by Fox Restaurant Concepts in partnership with The Joy Bus and The Henry, bringing together more than 100 guests, including healthcare leaders, community supporters, volunteers and advocates.
The 21-minute documentary chronicles The Joy Bus’ mission through the voices and lived experiences of the people it serves, highlighting the role nourishment and human connection can play during cancer treatment.
The evening featured a screening of Meals That Matter, a chef-curated menu by Fox Restaurant Concepts Chef Kenny Woods and a panel discussion featuring Jennifer Caraway, founder and CEO of The Joy Bus; filmmaker Stjepan Alaupovic; and Dr. Dan Rubin. The conversation explored the growing Food Is Medicine movement and the role nutrition can play as part of patient care.
“Watching Meals That Matter with a room full of people who care so deeply about this community was incredibly emotional. These are not simply stories in a film; they are people we have loved, learned from and had the privilege of walking alongside. Seeing their courage move others reminds me why I started The Joy Bus more than 15 years ago,” said Caraway. “I have always believed that a meal can be so much more than food. It can be dignity, comfort, connection and a reminder that someone cares about what you are going through. To see our community embrace that belief and recognize food as an essential part of caring for someone through illness makes me incredibly proud of how far we have come and excited about where this work is going.”
Directed and produced by Phoenix-based filmmaker Stjepan Alaupovic of Clear Online Video, Meals That Matter was developed in collaboration with The Joy Bus and centers the experiences of individuals navigating cancer. Through their stories, the documentary explores what it means to receive nourishment, dignity and connection during one of life’s most uncertain chapters.
“The greatest privilege of making Meals That Matter was earning the trust of the people who shared their stories with us. Seeing the film continue to reach new audiences and spark conversations about food, connection, community and The Joy Bus’ mission has been incredibly meaningful,” said Alaupovic.
The premiere comes during a milestone year for The Joy Bus. In June, the organization delivered its 100,000th medically tailored meal since its founding in 2011. The Joy Bus has continued to expand its reach, with meal deliveries increasing 500 percent year over year, while helping advance Arizona’s Food Is Medicine movement.
The organization also helped launch Food Is Medicine Coalition Arizona (FIMAZ), an effort bringing together healthcare providers, nonprofits and community leaders to advance awareness of and access to food-based interventions, including medically tailored meals.
“Meals That Matter” Continues 2026 Film Festival Run
The Phoenix premiere builds on a growing festival run for Meals That Matter, which has been selected for multiple film festivals in Arizona and beyond throughout 2026.
The documentary was named an Official Selection of the 2026 Phoenix Film Festival, where it screened to a sold-out audience.
The film will continue reaching audiences this fall through:
- Global Peace Film Festival: Meals That Matter has been selected for the 2026 festival and will be available to national audiences online Sept. 20–27.
- Show Low Film Festival: The documentary has been selected for the 2026 festival, taking place Oct. 16–18, where it will have two screenings.
The continued festival run will bring the stories captured in Meals That Matter to new audiences while expanding conversations around medically tailored meals, Food Is Medicine and compassionate support for individuals facing cancer.
