Enhancing comfort, convenience, and connectivity for travelers
Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport is strategically preparing for the future through Destination PHX 2050, a long-term development program that outlines major improvements as the airport plans to serve up to 90 million passengers a year by 2050. The program focuses on building modern facilities, improving efficiency, and supporting continued growth for travelers.
A central part of Destination PHX 2050 is the future West Terminal. The terminal will be built on the west side of Phoenix Sky Harbor and will be the airport’s first new terminal since Terminal 4 opened in 1990. It will serve as the main front door for growing international travel and will be designed to accommodate additional wide-body aircraft.
American Airlines, which serves more than 40% of all passengers at Phoenix Sky Harbor, will be the primary carrier for the new terminal. The project also provides opportunities for all airlines at PHX to continue expanding and serving travelers across Arizona.
The number of gates and final design features are still being developed. Construction could potentially begin in late 2029 with an opening in late 2033. The project will be funded with passenger facility charges, bonds, and airport funding. No local tax dollars will be used.
Phoenix Sky Harbor is also investing in improvements to Terminal 4, which currently handles the majority of airport traffic. Upgrades include modernization of the baggage system, concessions, building infrastructure and more.
Additional Destination PHX 2050 key projects are underway. Taxiway U is an aircraft taxiway connecting the north and south airfields that is currently under construction near PHX’s west entrance. The project will help improve aircraft movement and overall airfield efficiency. Another major project under construction is the Terminal 3 New North Concourse, a six-gate concourse that will add capacity and updated amenities to meet future passenger needs.
Together, these projects demonstrate Phoenix Sky Harbor’s commitment to improving the passenger experience and preparing for long-term growth.
