Rooted in a community-forward ethos, Sheraton Phoenix Downtown supports and contributes to a variety of non-profit organizations including The Welcome to America Project that serves refugees who have recently been relocated to the Greater Phoenix area. The organization creates community connections and builds bridges of neighborly understanding by providing furniture, basic necessities, education, and additional resources to these refugees. For World Refugee Day in June, the hotel is a sponsor for the community event each year, and hosts a breakfast honoring refugee resettlement agencies and community based organizations who support these New Americans. Sheraton Phoenix Downtown employees more than 90 refugees from thirteen different countries, bolstering a diverse workforce and providing jobs for those in need.
In addition, Sheraton Phoenix Downtown works to limit waste and give back to the local community through food. The hotel partners with the Chefs to End Hunger Program through Vesta Food Service to fill boxes with food that is not able to be repurposed, which is delivered to St. Mary’s Food Bank or United Food Bank to help end hunger in Arizona. Sheraton Phoenix Downtown also collaborates with R.City, a food waste pickup service with the mission of connecting residents and businesses to local farming while reducing food waste from entering landfills by creating compost. The hotel staff collects food waste daily that is delivered to R.City, a farm in Phoenix. The compost is used to regenerate the farm’s soil and grow produce that is available for purchase. Their business model creates opportunities for young and beginning farmers by paying all the typical overhead of a small farm.
