The 2023 legislature is on the 109th day of session without having passed a budget and adjourned. The Legislature has other outstanding issues to address, such as the Prop 400 extension, water, and housing, in addition to passing a budget by June 30th to avoid a government shutdown. Unfortunately, nothing substantial can be done at this juncture due to the House Republicans lacking their majority caused by the Liz Harris vacancy. Three names of candidates, including Liz Harris, have been sent to the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors. They made it clear they aren’t rushing the process to properly vet the person who will replace Harris’s vacancy in LD 13. In the meantime, the House and Senate will likely continue their small group budget discussions to get the needle moving forward. It’s been noted by many members and others that budget discussions have been going well with the Governor’s office. The latest state fiscal highlights show that the Legislature will have even more one-time monies to spend in the sum of $750 million, which you can read more about here. That may help get more members on board with the budget or cause larger issues for who will get a bigger piece of the pie.
