PHOENIX – Recently, after legislative leaders announced a plan to adjourn Sine Die next week, several members of the Arizona Legislature urged their respective leadership to resume the legislative session in order to consider various bills for which they are advocating/sponsoring. While the Board of Directors of the Greater Phoenix Chamber understands and is sympathetic to many of the issues our legislators are promoting, we strongly believe the Legislature should focus on public health and maintaining physical distancing which is difficult to do when deliberating and voting at the Capitol.
If, in fact, the Legislature decides it must reconvene to consider legislation, we highly recommend that they limit their action and solely align their priorities to support the critical priorities outlined by Governor Doug Ducey for Arizona:
- Protecting the health and safety of our citizens;
- Developing strategies to maintain our businesses and industries and positioning our economy for rapid recovery and growth;
- Focusing on solutions to deal with our fiscal shortfalls in state revenue.
These are the main issues pertinent to Arizonans at this time and should be given the highest priority. The Greater Phoenix Chamber will continue to support our policy-makers with information, data, and/or expertise to achieve these objectives. We also commend the Governor and legislative leadership for working closely with the Chamber, and other business organizations across the state. Though this is a very trying period for our country and state, we are confident that the leadership demonstrated in Arizona will allow us to not only weather this pandemic but also strengthen our standing as the premier state in the country.
